5 free things to do with a toddler before noon

My kids were always early risers. Especially when they were really young, by the time 10am rolled around I had exhausted the toys and activities in our house and was looking to go out for something new to look at. If you are in the Davis, CA area, here are five things that are all within fairly close proximity to each other. Find a favorite or combine a few to take you up ’til nap time.

On Tuesdays the Davis Branch Library has a program for infants from 2 – 12 months starting at 10:15 for twenty minutes. Then at 11:00am there is a “Mother Goose on the Loose” aimed at children from 12 – 36 months for 30 minutes. On Thursdays at 10:15 there is storytime for 3-5 year olds for a half hour.

On Tuesdays Explorit Science Center opens it doors at 10am and encourages the little ones to come in early. Kids ages 3 and under are always free, but don’t forget that the  third Tuesday of each month everyone is free.

The Bohart Museum of Entomology (or you can just call it the bug room) is open beginning at 8:30am. You can walk into this lab and view incredibly colorful bugs perfectly pinned under glass, or in a few terrariums there are some live critters that will amaze toddler and adult alike.

You can walk around and view raptors who are being rehabilitated and those who cannot be released but are there for educational purposes at the California Raptor Center. The center is open beginning at 9:30am and is a self-guided tour. Groups of six people or more are encouraged to make a reservation.

Walk around the Arboretum where there is plenty of room for a little one to burn off some energy. Ducks, geese and other beautiful birds are often in view. Turtle live in the creek and often hang out on the rocks. The loop around putah creek is three miles long and has interesting plants in every part.
