My 3 Favorite California Spots

I was recently invited by Sharlene at Double the Adventure to join a game of blogger tag. The idea is to share three travel secrets; destinations, favorite hotels or restaurants, etc.  The goal is to create a virtual index of some well kept travel secrets from travelers all over the world. Katie from Tripbase is keeping the list as bloggers keep the tags going.  Here are the recommendations I would give to any close friend wanting to see California.

California is a hotspot for vacationers. One problem with planning a vacation to the west coast is that since California is so big, it is hard to see and do everything within the week or two that people typically have for vacations. Often the first place people flock to is southern California. With the lure of Disneyland, Legoland, Universal Studios, and so many more unique parks, it is hard to pass up and does make an exciting family trip. Those who like the northern portion of California often stay in San Francisco. This city also has so much to offer; a gorgeous skyline, lots of art and entertainment, not to mention fascinating history destinations such as Alcatraz Island. As a resident Californian, though, I would like to offer up three other destinations that, although not as common, are just as spectacular.

Tahoe flume trailLake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is located where California and Nevada meet. Popular destinations are divided between the north shore and south shore. Both offer skiing areas in the winter and water recreation in the summer. The north shore seems to be less populated and more spread out so if you are looking to hop around from place to place, most people stay at south shore. Skiing is often what Tahoe is known for, but I prefer heading out there in the summer as I am admittedly a cold wimp. Summertime offers magnificent hiking and mountain biking suitable for all ages and skill levels, fishing, water sports of every kind, and you can even parasail over the lake.  (Parasailing is when you are attached to a parachute and a long tether that is anchored to a motorboat. The boat speeds around the lake as you get an incredible view from as high as 1200 feet in the air. You are later reeled back into the boat with some assistance from the crew. It is, unexpectedly, a serene experience. ) Lake Tahoe is one of my favorite destinations and a jewel of California.

Point Reyes

lighthouse-ptreyes-stairsPoint Reyes’ location has always reminded me of a dewclaw; that toe on a dog that sits higher than the rest of the paw and seems to have no purpose. On a map Point Reyes looks like an excess piece of land sticking out from the coastline, sure to become an island when the next big quake hits.  This description is less than romantic, I know, but this unique location gives Point Reyes a opportunity to have its own personality apart from the big city of San Francisco which is only one hour south. Here is a peaceful retreat where many of the B and B’s get the eggs, fruit and veggies served at breakfast from their own gardens and backyard chickens. Tomales Bay oysters are a specialty here, and fabulous restaurants are plentiful. Activities center around the admiration of nature through hikes, bird watching and kayaking tours. Point Reyes is what I think of for the beauty of the northern California coastline. More details on Point Reyes can be found on this site under “North Coast”.

Monterey coastMonterey Peninsula

At two hours south of San Francisco, Monterey does not often get selected as a destination by tourists. I would say most Californians, however, have visited here more than once. Those with families will find plenty to do: there is a world-renown aquarium, beautiful beaches, a children’s museum, and excellent play areas. There are activities that take advantage of the calm bay such as kayaking, diving and whale watching. The beauty of the shoreline attracts a large artist community, especially to nearby Carmel, where galleries are practically along every other street. (Carmel is also the most pet-friendly town I have ever known, with most shops and restaurants welcoming pets into their business.)  Another attraction of the Monterey area is that it is best enjoyed in the shoulder seasons, spring and fall. At those times the summer fogs lift and the weather is perfect for outdoor enjoyment. More blogs and trip ideas on Monterey can be found on this site under “Central Coast”.

I would add the Yosemite, both high country and the valley, even Wawona. It’s all beautiful up there. Otherwise, completely agree with your list.

I like what you posted here, very nice. I grew up in Reno and your site brought back a lot happy memories. What is you favorite place to visit in Reno? I cannot pick just one, there are too many to choose from. I always liked our family trips to Lake Tahoe. It’s such a mystic part of the world.
