There’s nothing like bringing a community together than a local holiday celebration. In early December our town puts on a tree-lighting ceremony complete with a night-time small parade and a chorus of kids between four and nine years old singing holiday songs. Locally we’ve been lucky with the weather, having a stretch of sunny days mixed in with a few foggy and windy ones. Enough sunshine, though, to make you believe autumn hasn’t left us. But bundling the kids up to go outside and listen to holiday music, check out all the lights that are up now downtown, and even watch a free showing of The Grinch that Stole Christmas, there’s no denying that winter won’t wait.
For photo Friday I really wanted to highlight the adorable rows of kids we watched, singing their lungs out. The songs had harmony, solos, and of course, coordinating hand gesture accompaniment. (Picture hands on their heads, fingers spread when they sang out “reindeer”. That sort of thing.) Not having all their parent’s permission to post their cherubic faces, I opted to take a risk and post the kids’ view of the crowd instead:
Its a dark shot, I know, so let me set the scene. Do you remember being really young and doing some school performance where there was an auditorium full of grown ups watching you? It made you freeze for a little bit, did it not? Well fast forward to this day where every proud mom, grandma or auntie has a camcorder or some large flash as an appendage to their face. As I looked out into the crowd trying to see it as these young kids would, it was like watching a papparazzi frenzy for at least the first song. The kids didn’t flinch, those brave souls. They are certainly ready to take on any red carpet.
I’d love to hear more about what local winter celebrations your town puts on. Also, check out Delicious Baby to see more Photo Friday travel stories.
What a great little angel! We too have been lucky with weather…just broke out the heavier jackets (as opposed to sweatshirts!) this morning!
I iwsh I was there bundled up as well. I’m still wearing a tee-shirt and disliking it.
I know what you mean. My kids were in daycare and they hosted Holiday event annually and the scene was just like you described.
We will in the Holiday Parade this year so my kids are so excited to be part of the parade that we have been watching in the past.
Great way to start off the holiday season!
Loving all the different christmassy/wintery pics in this weeks Photo Friday group. I am so in the holiday mood now!
I love the parents shot! Seeing all the cameras always cracks me up, cus it’s usually me. Thanks for sharing!
How sweet! I love little kids singing at Christmas. I swear it makes me tear up every time I hear them.
Hometown holiday celebrations are pretty special, aren’t they?
I’m particularly fond of great lighting displays.
Me too. Each year we pack up the kids and cruise around town looking for the best holiday lights. I look forward to later in the year when more people have them up. I read something in a magazine where a family who is cruises to see the lights around town also buys a little box of chocolate and leaves it as a thank you to the house they think is the best lit. This seems like a great gesture and represents the season well, so I hope to start that tradition this year.
I’m with Sharlene, I’m like a Frosty and melt all over when the start to sing. Hopeless!
Well, this is my first visit to your blog! We are a group of volunteers and starting a new initiative in a community in the same niche. Your blog provided us valuable information to work on. You have done a marvellous job!
