Photo Friday: Navigating a spooky channel

We recently tried our first boat-in camping. (The campsite is only accessable via boat.) As with many of our trips, it was not the adventure we had anticipated, but an adventure nontheless. You can read more about this trip in an earlier post. This photo didn’t make it into the post, but I thought it a good candidate for photo Friday. Since we went so late in the season, the water level of the lake was down about ten feet from its spring level. I’m not certain how low it has to get for so many trees to grow in what appears to be the middle of the channel, but the effect was that navigating by kayak was in part fun and in part really spooky. Add to that the fact that we arrived here, near our campsite, practically by moonight. Whoooo!

  1. Pretty picture! I love the campsites that you have to hike or travel by boat to get to. It helps remove you from the every day just a bit more!

Hey! We did some boat camping this past summer too – off our friend’s boat in the San Juan islands. It was great fun.
Thanks for sharing your photo :)

Thanks for sharing. I never heard of “boat-in camping” but I plan to try it one day.

The trees were definitely a lot more visible due to the lower water level. As to their origins, they are actually left over from when the reservoir was first filled about 30 years ago. The planners intentionally left the trees to improve the fish habitat, reportedly making Lake Sonoma an excellent fishing lake.
