Photo Friday: Putting Out the Flames

While we were playing at Natoma Lake on a recent trip, we noticed smoke rising from a bluff above us. The puffs quickly became a stream of smoke. I thought that from our vantage we probably won’t be able to see much of the firemen putting it out, aside from perhaps a stream of water coming from a hose. Soon enough we heard sirens heading toward us, then the thwonking of an approaching helicopter. The chopper descended slowly into the river as kayakers now quickly headed for shore. We all got quite a show as it hovered above the water for a few minutes, sucking up water with its hose, then rose and swung around to release the water right over the fire. This happened several times, on occasion giving us all a bit of a shower. Soon the fire was over and everyone went back to playing. Cool to see our city heroes in action.

  1. My husband and I had our own unexpected fire adventure while we were taking the Boeing Factory tour. One of the buildings on site caught fire.

Your kids must been fascinated by the firefighters at work.

    • Lora says:

Wow, that’s something you don’t see on many tours. The kids were interested in the whole thing, but seemed to forget about it the minute it was done. Never brought it up later.

  2. I’m glad the fire was contained. It must be amazing for the kids to see the real-life heroes at work.

  3. Wow…what an experience. How cool to see them in action!

  4. Dominique says:

Never seen anything like this, so it was interesting to see how firefighters worked in an area near the water!

As someone who recently moved from the Sacramento area after living there for 12 years, just hearing the words Lake Natoma brought back so many memories but never anything like that! How cool!

that is so cool, that you got to see it up close. WOW! i hope no one got hurt.

  7. That’s kind of freaky and scary!
The first picture actually looked like pesticides, which is very common here.

    • Lora says:

Yes, it would be a pretty upsetting picture if it were pesticides. I was surprised how much we could feel the water though it was dumped pretty far away from us.
