Good Tunes for Long Trips – WIN some music!

music matt

Having great cds is a staple for any long car trip we take. Nothing makes a car ride more pleasant than having the munchkins singing along in the back. Seriously, nothing!

Here are a few albums that are favorites in our family. AND don’t miss out on winning some excellent tunes for yourself! Read on…(these are not in any particular order)

  • Captain Bogg & Salty, Emphatical Piratical: If you can’t pass up buckeneer rock you’ll like this high energy album with clever lyrics and enough silliness to keep the kids requesting it repeatedly.
  • Whaddaya Think of That? Laurie Berkner:  This one seems geared toward the pre-school or early school-aged crowd. It includes some cool travel tunes; one about packing up your clothes, one about traveling on an airplane plus a few well-known goodies.
  • Ralph’s World, At the Bottom of the Sea:  This has a little bit of something for everyone: kids, parents, and coffee drinkers.
  • Good Day, Music Matt & the Whole 9 Yards:  Music Matt is well-known in my hometown.  He is often booked wherever you  find a kid-friendly event. His songs include lessons that we love to have the kids singing about (having a good attitude, hygiene, and of course music).  True story, my little one has stopped mid-tantrum during the song about body parts to point to the appropriate place. Now that’s powerful. To win this and his latest cd read on.

Besides music I think it also worth mentioning that stories on cd can be a great tool to pull out when you need some quiet in the car to focus. Audible.com  has the ability to recommend books (for purchase) based on age. Storybook cds can get pricey so we have often checked them out from the library.

Of course you don’t need to plan a long trip to get excited about great music. I’m happy to announce that Music Matt has graciously donated his “Good Day” album and latest release, “Up Up and Away” to be given away. The second album is also filled with great rock and roll for kids “and un-grown-ups”.

There are several ways you can enter your name to win these albums. Either

  1. write in the comments section your own favorite albums or stories on cd (this will provide you 1 entry) or
  2. write up one of your favorite trips and email it to me for publication on this site. Please indicate if it is intended as a mini trip, a half-day trip, or a full-day trip. A mini trip would be a description of one location (providing you 3 entries), a half-day trip (providing 5 entries) would be two or more nearby locations including directions from one to the other (and nearby restaurants if possible), and a full day trip would be two or more locations that together would take up a full day, and must have a recommended nearby restaurant/wind-down place with appropriate directions. (This offers 7 entries). Authorship will be credited on the website, and your entry need not be restricted to California but preferably within the US. (I am slowly expanding the site).

Entries will be chosen randomly, but you are welcome to send in multiple trips for better chances. Trips should be emailed to lora@trippingwithkids.com. Please include a trip picture (jpeg preferred) or a link to a picture that I can publish. Multiple pictures are great too.  Entries will be received through September 20th, 2009.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Have you ever heard of Justin Roberts? We LOVE him. He’s a kindergarten teacher turned musical genius for kids (and four-time Parents’ Choice Gold Award winner.) We listen to his CDs in the car, and have also taken Haley to see him perform live.

We’re also big fans of Weird Al (yep) and of course, we know the entire Barney catalog of tunes ;-)

  2. We tend toward rowdy rock and roll for our summer roadtrips. A great way to start out a summer trip is Alice Cooper’s Schools Out for Summer!

Another song that turns around any grouchy car trip is “Who Let the Dogs Out”

Driving to the Indiana Jones soundtrack always makes me feel important and adventurous :)

I agree – You can’t start a summer road trip without a few renditions of ‘School’s out for Summer’. My kids have been addicted to the Camp Rock soundtrack this summer too!

I really like the Veggie tales karaoke cd… my daughter loves to sing along.
