Lovin the Lorikeets

lorakeetsWho can resist feeding a tropical bird right from your hand? Not I, nor my kids, nor the other screaming kids on field trip to the zoo that day for that matter. We made a wonderful find at the Micke Grove Park in Lodi, CA. The Lorikeets, visiting from May – Sept., were a big highlight.  The zoo, though small, was just about right for my pre-schooler and toddler. Half the fun is going from exhibit to exhibit discovering what lives on the other side of the railing, who cares if it is something tropical found in the rain forests of Equador or merely a desert tortoise. My kids were just as happy checking out what bugs or food could be found in the food dish of each animal. It’s very walkable and green / shaded. This latter is always a factor worth pointing out when you are traveling in the Sacramento valley.

As this adventure spent about an hour and a half for us, we also headed next door to the place called Fun Town. Again, its just right for fairly young thrill-seekers. We got a ten pack of tickets for $15, and fortunately for Ryan, his brother was not in the mood to do much else but watch.  Since we chose a weekday during the school year, there were so few people around that one of the staff simply followed us and started up whichever ride we wanted to go on next. Now that’s service I’ve never had at a theme park before.

By this time it was enough fun for my two year old. However, if we didn’t have naptime to deal with, I noticed there was a nice garden in which to have a picnic lunch and some interesting playground areas we could have spent more time exploring. Definately worth another trip before the Lorikeets fly back to their permanent home. Click here for more detailed  information on making a half-day trip to Micke Grove Park.
