UC Davis is a great place to explore both on bike or by foot. Across the street from where you catch the double deckers is the Memorial Union. This is a cluster of activities for students: the bookstore, coffee shop, and bowling alley / video arcade, just to name a few. On the side of the MU nearest the bus station are a few tables and a fun set of huge chimes, but on the other side of the MU are lots of outdoor picnic type tables, a large quad with trees that are great for picnicking under or a good game of hide and go seek, a water feature, and a variety of affordable food nearby.
One feature this campus offers that you don’t often see is a fabulous arboretum. It has a 3 ½ mile walking path. The best way to access it is near the administration building, Mrak Hall. Near this entrance is a large grassy area where both ducks and students gather to relax and take in the scenery. (The campus discourages feeding the ducks, however.) As you watch the variety of birds from here, immediately to the left is the largest grove of coastal redwoods found outside of the coast. This is also a nice peaceful place to take in some lunch. Interactive signs line the path to add education to the serenity of the place.
There are several opportunities for interesting walking tours. You can find arboretum walking tours and further information about the plants here or a walking art tour of eggheads here. The eggheads are humorous art created by Robert Arneson and the five pieces are scattered across the campus.
